Me and My Girl

Me and My Girl musical

The Sainsbury Singers presented Me and My Girl on 24-28 October 2006 at The Hexagon Theatre, Reading.

Book and Lyrics by L. Arthur Rose and Douglas Furber.
Music by Noel Gay.  Book Revised by Stephen Fry. Contributions to revisions by Mike Ockrent.

“Me And My Girl” is one of the best-loved musicals of all time.  It first opened at the Victoria Palace in 1937 and its run of 1646 performances survived the outbreak of war and the Blitz.  The show soon became famous for “The Lambeth Walk” which became a craze.

This version of the show, with its revised book by Stephen Fry, was first presented at the Leicester Haymarket Theatre in 1985 starring Robert Lindsay and Emma Thompson which later transferred to the Adelphi Theatre in London.

A timeless tale of a Cockney wide boy, Bill Snibson, who inherits the title and fortune of the Harefords of Hampshire.  The Harefords attempt to educate Bill in the way of the upper classes and separate him from his cockney girlfriend, Sally.  Do they succeed?

With comic characters, spectacular dance routines and plenty of fun and slapstick, the story unfolds to the sound of classic songs such as “The Sun Has Got His Hat On”, “Leaning On A Lampost” and “Lambeth Walk”.
